This was sent to me today, this guy in hawaii is kind of, maybe, probably, somewhat seriously considering selling his 51k mile E34 ///M5. I know this generation M5, hell this generation 5 series in general is kind of a bastard generation and doesn't get much love or recognition. But this car is seriously stunning.

Would definitely DD.

My favorite BMW! Almost half a world apart sadly.

I know, the location makes it a tough sell. But damn would it be cool to rip around hawaii in this thing.

Oh I'd 11/10 buy it if I lived there.

That is nice. Any idea on what he is looking to get for it?

not a clue. Like I said, its kinda sorta maybe possibly somewhat for sale lol

I thought the E34 was widely considered the most reliable 5-Series ever made. There was one of these for sale near me for about a month, $6,000 and it had 250,000 miles.

it has the same engine (sans the V8) as the the E28, but more technology. if anything I'd put the e28 over this in reliability.
Still, I never hear of anyone talking about E34's, hence why I say its the forgotten bastard generation of 5 series cars.

people ship cars from hawaii on the reg. Anywhere hippies congregate on the west coast you'll see a profusion of, pardon, hella HI plates.

also, if you've never hooned hawaii do so before you die. gently curving 2 lane blacktop and marvelous views either side. their rental fleets couldn't possibly last very long. somebody start the used bmw hawaiian delivery program.

I went to Honolulu and the big island back in 2006
we did not have a E34 M5 to drive though.

Well, you've got Genesis, the E28, the first M5 ever. The E34 is just "the second M5" and is probably waaay overshadowed by the E39 M5 which no one is ever allowed to talk bad about ever. Then there's the E60 and I have no idea what the opinion is on that one.
![]() 02/21/2014 at 15:39 |

you summed it up perfect

Why is it considered a bastard generation? The E34 M5 is the last of the hand built M5s and the last one (so far!) to run an I6, which of course if BMW's traditional engine layout. Also, the S38 is a screamer - ask me how I know!
I'd rather have an E39 M5 for DD duty (and in fact used to), but this car is higher up the collectible scale even if the S62 V8 in the E39 M5 is awesome.

because you never see or hear of them, thats why. Its heavier/slower than the E28 and not the benchmark of performance sedans like the e39

These things are at the bottome of the depreciation curve. When E28's and E39's become more expensive and more difficult to find in good shape, these will become popular again. I have some cash laying around and would love to pick one up as a 2nd vehicle/investment.

Wow, looks very clean. I wouldn't mind having that in my garage.

Oh I see. I guess there are several in my neighborhood in SF so I see quite a few of them. I think you are right that the cars with the early motors are slower in a straight line than the E28, but the later motors (S38B36 and B38) cured that I believe. Still they are not as fun in the twisties as the E28s.

I rarely see E34's at all, I know of like two, and one is in the backhills of PA. I think its a 528

Wut?
Why do you have to live there?
This is your FAV car. And taking a vacation to Hawaii to buy your favorite car would be the coolest thing ever!

It can't be that expensive to ferry back. I'll drive the rest of the way.

Yeah and it's worth it for a mint condition car like this!
And Hawaii is freaking awesome. Have you ever been?
![]() 02/21/2014 at 20:32 |

No but I've heard it's awesome. For you this car would be doable, but for me it's much farther our of reach.

If only you could convince your Dad to buy it and drive it until you can afford to buy it from him...
You gotta go to Hawaii one day. Tropical paradise without as many bugs and dangerous animals as most tropical paradises. And without the sketchiness of them too. You're still in America, but it's tropical. Very, very cool.

In certain parts of california it's not uncommon to see 500 dollar cars with HI plates. I doubt they were all imported by wealthy eccentrics with sentimental attachments to rusted out hatchbacks. On that basis I'll guess that it's pretty cheap to ship a car to the mainland.

An American tropical paradise would be heaven!

You HAVE to do the twisty jungle drive in Maui before you die. Make sure to put it on your bucket list. Even if you have a tour guide drive it the experience is still awesome.

If I ever drive in one of those tour things, I'll be sure to hoon the shit out of the car they give me.
